Glory Hole

A glory hole is an opening in the side of a furnace. It is used by the glass artist to reheat glass that is at the end of their blowpipe, punty or other long-handled equipment.

This allows the artist to work the hot glass for an extended time. Additionally, glass design elements that have been added to the hot glass gather are made pliable in the glory hole.

The artist usually rests the blowpipe on the yoke -- a stand in front of the glory hole -- and slides the glass into the glory hole, rotating the pipe so as to keep the glass centered.
